Term Extension
Term extension is the recommended configuration in most cases. It helps reduce search errors and limits noise by avoiding irrelevant products in search results.
Unlike synonyms, term extension works one way only.
This means the rule is applied only in the direction you configure, and not the reverse, giving you better control over search behavior.
When to use term extension
Use term extension when:
- a keyword returns no results, or
- a keyword returns not enough products.
How to set it up
- Start with the term (keyword) to extend
This is the keyword causing the issue in search results. - Add one or more target terms (keywords)
These are the additional keywords you want the search engine to use to broaden the results.
Synonyms Groups
Using synonyms groups is generally not recommended, as they work both ways.
This bidirectional behavior can introduce a significant amount of irrelevant results, especially when multiple terms are grouped together.
Such noise can negatively impact:
- search relevance,
- user experience,
- and overall business performance.
When synonyms can be useful
In some specific cases, synonyms may still be relevant and effective.
✅ Best Practice Tip
To maintain optimal search relevance and performance:
- Keep a limited number of configurations
- Avoid creating too many multi‑term rules in both Term Extension and Synonyms
- Prefer simple, targeted configurations over large or complex keyword groups
Having too many multi‑term configurations can:
- introduce unnecessary noise,
- make search behavior harder to predict,
- and reduce overall result quality.
When in doubt, less is more — and your Customer Success Managercan help you decide the best configuration strategy.
